Going retro can often be a cheap gimmick that doesn’t really hold up over time (see The Artist) but sometimes it really seems like just the right choice for a given movie.  That was certainly the case with Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida, which beautifully took on the look and feel of 50s and 60s European cinema.  This works as well as it does in part because Pawlikowski does not merely imitate an old style but also add to it with his clever framing and beautiful contrast levels.  Of course this film isn’t ranked this high merely because it has a cool look; it’s also a very interesting exploration of both identity and of the lingering effects of world tragedy.  Additionally, it’s a good character study about a young woman at a crossroads who very quietly goes on an emotional and spiritual journey.
