Richard Linklater is an oddly humble filmmaker, and that can make him easy to underestimate.  Twice now we’ve thought he was crazy to return to his “Before” series and thought he would ruin it, only to have him (and his collaborators) prove us wrong.  This third film in the series feels like it’s both a piece with its predecessors while also being very different, in part because its characters are consistent while being at a very different place in their lives as the film starts.  Where the previous films in the series were about falling in love, this installment is about the work that goes into keeping love alive.  As the film goes on, it becomes clear that even the romance for the ages that was presented in the first two films is still a fragile thing, and the arguments do become pretty heated.  Linklater and co. do a great job of keeping an even balance between the various sides in these fights and make it all feel very real.
