In 2008 I defended the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button because I felt David Fincher’s filmmaking elevated the movie above its average-at-best script. Well, he’s done it again. I think this is about as good an adaptation as we’re likely to see of Stieg Larsson pulpy novel of the same name. It’s certainly better than the crudely constructed Swedish adaptation that came out a few years earlier. In fact a direct comparison between the two versions of the story could almost be a study in how much a film can benefit from the strong vision of an auteur behind the camera. Fincher’s style is of course perfect for this material and I’m more than willing to overlook some a couple of Stieg Larsson’s lumps in order to enjoy Fincher’s latest soufflé.
