Jeff Nichols’ debut film, Shotgun Stories, was a decent indie with a good visual style, but there wasn’t much in it to prepare us for Nichols’ fully formed sophomore effort, Take Shelter. Dealing with themes of paranoia, insanity, and responsibility Take shelter tell a deep story within a small canvas. Both Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain are excellent in their roles as a husband who believes he’s seeing apocalyptic visions and a wife who must deal with the fallout. Speaking of the apocalyptic visions, they’re extremely well rendered; nicely ambiguous but also frightening in their own way. My only real complaint about the film is its ending, which I felt sort of undid the film’s nice ambiguity, but otherwise this is a strong work worthy of high praise.
