[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] While I don’t like it as much as Darren Aronofsky’s last film, The Wrestler, this does serve as an excellent companion piece to that 2008 breakthrough.  This certainly ain’t you daddy’s ballet movie, it’s a dark character study which often operates with the soul of a Polanski-esque horror movie.  Natalie Portman is as great here as she’s been touted, giving a highly physical and fully dedicated performance and doing most of the dancing herself to boot.  That Aronofsky was able to turn this dark ballet movie into a worldwide hit just shows how much of a special project this was to begin with.
