[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] There was a lot that could have gone wrong with this movie.  It could have been sanctimonious, it could have been overly cute, it could have been uninteresting (how much drama can there be if the kids are indeed alright), but it was none of these things in the end.  What was it?  A charming movie that brought interesting, believable, and likable characters to life and understood them as they played out their story in a logical and enjoyable way.  That might not sound like a major accomplishment, but when you consider just how many movies aren’t able to do something like that you can really appreciate just what Lisa Cholodenko was able to do here.
