[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] The Coen Brothers are capable of many things, but I never expected them to make a relatively straightforward traditionalist western and to make it with such skill.  The film is generally an improvement on the 1969 adaptation of the same source novel, made with more skill and with a the Coens’ dry wit added to the mix.  There’s fun to be had here but it’s also a movie that knows to be somber when it needs to.  Add to the mix a really good cast and some excellent cinematography by Roger Deakins and you have one of the year’s most enjoyable films.
