[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] The latest entry into Danny Boyle’s solid but uneven filmography is actually one of his best works.  While most filmmakers would have leaned into the isolation and desperation of the film’s subject, Boyle instead taps into the adrenalin rush it must have taken to break free of his mountaintop trap.  This is in many ways the more creative route to travel as it takes genuine vision in order to make a film set in a single location with only one actor this energetic.   The film is really more of a character study than a tale of wilderness adventure.  It’s about a man’s painful realization that he’s not invincible and that there’s no shame in reaching out and asking for help.
