[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] I always reserve the tenth slot on my lists for movies that I feel have been overlooked come year end, even if there might be other titles left off the list that might have been a little bit better.  Sometimes they were early releases forgotten by the time lists are made, sometimes they were simply misunderstood by the critical establishment, and sometimes (as is the case this year) their success is better felt within the confines of a articular genre rather than within the broader range of cinema.  Splice was one of the few really strong horror movies to come along in a year where the genre was very weak.  The film is not wildly scary per se, but it is made with conviction and it addresses age old fears about science in a very non pretentious B-movie sort of way.
