[Ed. Note: original piece was lost, what follows was written retroactively in 2011] I never did have the viscerally positive reaction to The Hurt Locker that many critics and Academy voters seem to have had.  When I first saw it I thought “eh, this is pretty good, but I doubt it will make the top ten list.  As it turned out 2009 was a pretty weak year and as it turned out there weren’t going to be another nine movies better… but let’s focus on the positive now.  If nothing else the movie does have a number of really strong set-pieces, particularly a sniper battle midway through the film which was really tense and realistic.
