2013 Chase of the Year Winner

The Place Beyond the Pines

It’s weird, the other four chases here were probably made for more money than they had to shoot the entirety of The Place Beyond the Pines and yet, in its own lo-fi way, this scene is the most memorable.  That’s in part because it serves as an important transition in the movie between point of views and director Dereck Cianfrance’s decision to film the scene largely by placing his cameramen in the passenger seat of cop cars he helps to foreshadow and ease that transition.  It’s a canny visual storytelling tool that also gives the chase an aura of realism while simultaneously making it immediate and exciting.
