The Act of Killing
The Act of Killing has apparently caused quite a stir in Indonesia and has forced a lot of introspection within that society. It’s also uncovered quite a bit of dirty laundry in the west, but I’m not giving it this award because of its political importance. Rather I’m giving it this award because it delves into the human condition and forces the people in the audience to ask themselves what they’re capable of. I probably could have done without the gimmick of having the participants film Hollywood style reenactments of their crimes, but the interviews themselves are more than powerful enough to make up for that.
