Blue is the Warmest Color
This award ultimately came down to two movies that chronicle long term relationships between people who at first glance seem to be opposites. Before Midnight impressed me because it felt authentic, had characters I liked, and felt like it really said a lot about relationships. It was great, but I felt that Blue is the Warmest Color also did all of that and then one upped it by doing a number of other things in addition. It also had the burden of being a coming of age film, a film about sexual orientation, and a film about finding one’s self. Beyond that it managed to do all of these things in a way that seemed remarkably natural and unwritten.
