2011 Best Set-Piece Winner

The Tree of Life

I knew that if I nominated this sequence it would win, so most my deliberations focused on whether it qualified for the category.  Ultimately I decided that there’s simply no reason why I shouldn’t reward Malick and his crew for using their abilities to make a sequence that would give their audience a sense of awe and give them something to think about.  Hollywood rarely finds the ambition to put this kind of effort into anything other than violent actions scenes.  Now I’ve got nothing against violent action scenes, but they’re not the only game in town.  Maybe this isn’t an apples to apples comparison with the other nominated scenes, but the simple fact is that there was more skill used to make this twenty minute sequence than there was in any other twenty minute segment of any other film made this year.
