2010 Best Cinematography Winner

Shutter Island

The odds on favorite to win the cinematography category at this year’s Oscars is Roger Deakins, partly because he’s long been considered “overdue.”  I get that, but it’s not really something I need to worry about much, because I’m not the one who’s been snubbing the guy for the last twenty-five years.  What I do need to worry about is the fact that in that twenty five years, Deakins has done a lot of work very similar to his work in True Grit and he’s done it better.  Shutter Island on the other hand is a glorious in its ability to use below the line technical assets like cinematography in order to create a certain cinematic purity.  The look evokes old Hollywood while still feeling like a vibrant modern film.
