2009 Most Under-Appreciated Winner

The Road

Part of the problem that The Road faced might have been that the novel it was based upon was so beloved that it couldn’t live up to the visions in various critics heads.  But I think the real reason for the critical malaise was probably the recession.  Jobs for critics in the mainstream media are disappearing fast and sending your readers to grim movies about holding on for life in a hostile environment is probably not the best thing for your job security.  That’s a shame, because a really strong piece of work goes ignored because of it.
